In this pile of earth, the sand corresponds to the grains in sieves 2 and 3, from the left.
Indeed, according to building practices, sand corresponds to the fraction of grains between 80 micrometres and 2 millimetres.
In descending order, the largest grains are pebbles (20cm-2cm), gravels (2cm-2mm), sands (2mm-80μm), silts (80μm -2μm) and clays (less than 2μm).
So earth is a mix of different proportion of different types of grains.
Note: this operation to separate the different grain sizes in order to characterize the composition of the earth is called granulometry.
