The technology of solar thermal energy can be used to heat residential buildings or industrial applications. The functionality of a solar thermal system is explained, the components of a solar system are described in detail, different collector types, storage tanks and system types are compared. Solar cooling as a special application uses solar energy to provide cooling. Different types of systems are also explained and compared. In addition, it is shown which criteria have to be considered when planning solar thermal systems and solar cooling systems.
